Achievements of Metternich(1815-1848)

Between 1815-1848, Metternich was so successful in European affairs that this period had been described as “Metternich era” and he himself was “a couch man of Europe.” Metternich  himself felt that the world was resting on his shoulders. He remarked “ my position has this peculiarity that all eyes, all expectations are directed to precisely that point where I happen to be.” He achieved the following;

1.       Downfall of Napoleon
Metternich made agreat contribution towards the downfall of Napoleon I who had disorganized the whole continent of Europe. He influenced the formation of the 4th coalition with other countries like Britain, Russia and Prussia that led to the defeat of Napoleon at the battle of Leipzig and exiled him at the Island of Elba. He also made Vienna congress to mobilize a force of 800,000 men that defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo and exiled him to the rocky Island of St. Hellena where he died in 1821.

2.       Admitted France
Metternich made France to be part of the congress system and advocated for fair treatment of France after the defeat of Napoleon. He persuaded European allies that the problem to Europe was not France but Napoleon. This made france to be admitted into the congress. It made France to reconcile and forget of revenging against the allies which brought peace, stability and unity in Europe

3.       Initiated congress system
He initiated the congress system that would help to solve outstanding issues on the round table instead of wars. This began at Charmont in 1814, Vienna in 1815, Aix-la chappalle in 1818 etc. although the congress system finally collapsed by 1830. It was a good gesture for the formation of other international organizations like the League of Nations, U.N.O that have maintained world peace up to now.
